Life without cable TV
So we have been without cable TV for about three weeks now. And I have to say that it has had distinct advantages and disadvantages in my household and in my personal life.
Firstly, I have no idea what is happening around the world, around the country or around my neighborhood anymore. This is good and bad. It is bad in the sense that I have absolutely no information about things like the weather (unless I read my newspaper, but it is hard to 'overread' the news in the paper when I am getting ready for work), traffic or all the things that have been going on that cause people pain and anguish. It is good in the sense that I have absolutely no information about all the things that have been going on that cause people pain and anguish. Seriously, how much do you really want to know about how bad other people have it? It is kind of nice not knowing that all hell is breaking loose around me.
Another nice side effect is that the wife and I have signed up for Netflix. This is quite possibly the best business idea ever invented for the direct-to-consumer end of the eCommerce market. We get new movies all the time. Movies tat are fresh and movies that are classics. Whatever we want, we get. And their interface is cool too (from a web developer standpoint).
Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that little bit out there. It is nice and not nice at the same time. But it is bringing my wife and I closer together, so I suppose in my case, the nice far outweighs the not nice effects of it.
