Thoughts, rants and commentary from a husband, father of five and professional web geek

TGIF

Man, I need this Friday so bad. It has been such a tiring week at work and at home and on the road to work from home and to home from work. I am just plain tired.

I left work a little early today to pick up a few things from the store. Then I headed home to make Teriyaki Chicken breast, Rice-a-Roni and steamed veggies (broccoli, snap peas, carrots and water chestnut). After cleaning up dinner, we had Krispy Kreme donuts and watched “A Christmas Story” before doing bed time. At which point I was done, and promptly fell asleep on the couch.

I had no idea I was this tired.

Well, I am that much closer to being a Zend Certified Engineer. I just bought three online training course credits from PHP|Architect, one of which is the certification training and test.

The best thing about this is that I am being reimbursed by my company for it. So I am actually not spending anything on the classes. Well, I am. About $2200 at the moment. But it will all come back to me in about two weeks. So I am happy. I get to be certified.

No, not certifiable. Certified.

Where has this month gone?

Posted on November 28th, 2007 in General | No Comments »

Is it just me or has November seemed to just fly right by us?

I can’t remember another time when a month just happened. Maybe it is because my wife has been so sick. Or maybe it is because I have been so busy. But I seriously cannot remember a time when things went by so fast that I could not remember when they went by.

I need to rest I think. At this rate I’ll be 85 by next week.

Glad I waited

I am actually writing this after what I want to write about happened. Considerably after, and I think it is for the better.

I am not going to go into detail what I went through this afternoon, or how bad I feel inside because of it. Just know that had I chosen to write about it when I wanted to, you would know more about my thoughts, my frustrations and my finances than you probably should.

I am a little better now. Not all the way better, but a little better. I just can’t wait to get through this season.

Am I getting unfootballized?

Posted on November 26th, 2007 in Funnies | No Comments »

Tonight is Monday night. You know what that means? You got it. MNF… Monday Night Football.

The funny thing is that I made it through almost the entire day yesterday without thinking about football. When I did think about football it was really only to grab a score or two. I did try to catch the last few minutes of the New England game on nfl.com. And it looked like it was a good game.

Now I am thinking though, of all the seasons to not watch any football, why this season? This season saw the first game between two 8-0 team when New England faced off against Indianapolis. We are now looking at one undefeated team (New England at 11-0), two 10-1 teams (Dallas and Green Bay) and a 9-2 team (Indianapolis). What a great year of football.

Even better, this weekend, Green Bay meets up with Dallas for an NFC clash of the titans akin to that Indy/New England match up a few weeks ago.

I think this is going to be a crazy football season from here on out. I cannot wait for the playoffs. If I think the season is this good now, I can just imagine what the playoffs will be like.

… OK, so maybe I am not getting unfootballized like I thought…

Being touched

Posted on November 25th, 2007 in On Children, On Family, On Parenting | No Comments »

My seven year old daughter Adriannah did something that really touched me last night. She asked me and my wife if she could pray for us.

Not only did that touch me, but her prayer was actually very tender and very sweet. I am amazed at the capacity for sincerity that a child possesses and the ability a child has to vocalize those sincere feelings in words that could bring a look of astonishment to almost anyone, young or old.

Where does that come from? I think, because I am Christian, that my answer to this question might be more slanted than someone else’s. Simply put, I think that children have a greater ability to commune with God at a simple level than adults do. And I think that God is simple. So when a child of seven can lay hands on you and pray that the holy spirit would pour out Grace upon (yes, those words exactly) and that you would be blessed at work and while you travel to and from work, well, my only explanation is that the spirit of God manifested itself in her and gave her the words to speak.

Ultimately what really matters is that the prayer was spoken and was sincere. That, by itself, is enough for me.

Momma’s getting better

Posted on November 24th, 2007 in Getting Out, Personal Messages | No Comments »

For the first time in a long time my wife was able to get out of the house with the family.

I decided that the kids needed some time out of the house after a somewhat stressful last few weeks. So to offer them some time out we went to Lake Elizabeth. My wife decided to go with us and we were able to actually spend about an hour playing and walking. It was awesome.

So awesome in fact that my daughter Sarah told us tonight that she almost forgot that mom was sick while we were out at the park. How cool is that?

Keep praying for us. It is working.

Black Friday sucks

Posted on November 23rd, 2007 in Rants | No Comments »

I suppose everyone at one time or another has to experience the carptastic funk of a Black Friday. For those unfamiliar with that term, it is used to describe the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. It is a day that many retailers gauge their Christmas season sales forecasts with and it is a day in which the true spirit of Christmas comes out.

People cussing at other people, sneaking in lines, cutting folks off, telling them they’re number one with the wrong finger… all of the stuff you would expect from drunken gangsters at an Oakland Raiders game all wrapped in the guise of Christmas shopping. And I was out in it yesterday.

Not really because I wanted to be. But there was something that I really want to try to get my hands on for one of my daughters. I didn’t leave early like the other idgets. No, I waited until about 10:00 AM. But still, that was not nearly enough time to let all those sale chasers clog up the streets of Fremont.

Anyway, I am totally jaded to Christmas from a gift giving point of view. Today just made that worse. I love Christmas, but I really detest anything that has to do with Christmas that involves gift giving.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a great buy.

No, not God

Posted on November 21st, 2007 in Funnies | No Comments »

Last night while doing our thankfuls, my son, who loves to participate, got stuck on what to be thankful. So all we heard for a few seconds was “I’m tahnkful for, um…”.

To try to facilitate his thankfulness, I began to offer suggestions to him. “You train? You juice cup? Your Thomas jammers?” Then the whole family got involved and started to offer him suggestions. As the suggestions started to rain down on him you could see him getting overwhelmed by all the suggestions.

Just as Alaynah, our four year old, offered the sugestion “God? Are you thankful for God?” my son replied with a loud and emphatic “NO NOT GOD!”.

After a spot of laughing and quiet, I realized something. I am so thankful for laughter.
