One man's voice Thoughts, rants and commentary of a simple man

Who’s it going to be this week?

I can honestly say that I only saw the last half of American Idol last night. But from what I saw I can say that there are a few contestants that I think may have a harder time making to next week than others.

First let me say that I am almost certain that David Cook will walk away with this thing if no one else sets themselves apart. David, week in and week out, brings it. Hard.

David Archuleta and Michael Johns stand a chance. Outside of that I think everyone else is walking a thin line.

This week, I think that line will be walked with intrepidation by:

  • Carly Smithson who showed no emotion in her performance of Total Eclipse of the Heart
  • Jason Castro sang as plain as anyone could
  • Syesha Mercado once again proved that she is predictable singing a ballad type song

I have met my Sanjaya for 2008

And her name is Kristy Lee Cook.

This is going to be interesting this season. For two weeks now Kristy Lee Cook has blown it. Badly.

And she has been in the bottom two for both of those weeks. Yet she manages to come out of it unscathed.

Last week it was beating out David Hernandez. This week she beat out Amanda Overmeyer. When is this madness going to end?

Amanda is a great performer. She is bluesy and rockerish. And she had a terrible night this week.

Kristy Lee Cook on the other hand has a great audition and a great Hollywood week. But outside of that she has yet to show why she is in the top 12. This week was no exception.

Perhaps her run will come to an abrupt end next week? That is yet to be seen. But one thing is clear. Kristy Lee Cook has become this year's version of Sanjaya Malakar for me. And I hope that little situation ends sooner this year than it did last year.

KLC for the second week in a row

DISCLAIMER: I missed the first four performers and can only speak of their performances based on the run down at the end of the show.

Last night was an abysmal night for American Idol. The songs were rough, the theme (Beatles) was even rougher and the performers seemed to be completely out of sorts. While I thought David Archuleta, David Cook and Chikezie all did very well, the rest of the performances were just ok if not horrible.

Kristy Lee Cook, in my opinion, needs to go home this week. Her performance lacked everything a good performance has and her singing was awful. Amanda Overmeyer, a favorite of mine for a while, blew it hard. Michael Johns did a terrible job and Jason Castro stunk it up too.

The rest of the performers were just OK.

I am not sure if it was the stage, the music or the theme tonight but all of the singers just didn't bring it. I hope next week they will.

But for this week I think the three to watch for being in the bottom three are: Kristy Lee Cook, Amanda Overmeyer and Syesha Mercado.

Dude, I was way off

Well, not really. But I was wrong.

I was almost certain Kristy Lee Cook's destruction of her performance was the wet sponge on the envelope of her demise. But it was not so.

No, instead America found that David Hernandez provided the appropriate amount of suck to be sent home. So there he stood on stage flanked by who I thought was being canned and Syesha Mercado (come on America, Syesha?). When Syesha was told to head back to the seats I just knew that Kristy Lee Cook was packing. She knew. David knew it.

Then Ryan did the unthinkable. He said the name "David Hernandez". And the sky fell.

Well, okay, maybe it was not that dramatic. But to me it was. I wanted to be right (I always want to be right) and all of a sudden I wasn't.

Worse yet is that I will need to wait an entire week before I get the chance to try to be right again.

But believe you me I will be putting every effort into being right next week. After all, absolutely nothing depends on it.

Goodbye Kristy Lee Cook

Oh yeah, she is the one. No, not the one. The one that is going home this week.

While I thought that Ramiele could have been the one to call it a week at American Idol, I was reminded that there could be worse performances when David Hernandez took the stage. Thinking that our male callboy was through with his stint, I was content to watch the rest of the show as a watchful spectator.

Until Kristy Lee Cook. She said in her short film before her performance that she was going to take a risk and make a country style song out of her performance. What she didn't say was that to her country style means sort of 1950's bluegrass fiddling type country.

That was just stupid. Not so much risky as just plain stupid.

And for that she is out of here. I think we all know it. I think she knows it.

Let's just see.

On a side note, I think David Archuleta fell from grace last night when he forgot his words. Come on dude. This is the big time. You have been wowing us since day one. What gives?

Chikezie, however, and David Cook rocked it hard for the boys. Chikezie reminded me of a Ruben Studdard with his outstanding performance, and David Cook finally showed that he can take the stage without his trusty guitar. Both are contenders for the crown if they can maintain that style of performance.

For the girls, Carly Smithson and Amanda Overmeyer tore it up from top to bottom, offering magnificent performances with a rocking hard style. I wish Amanda would enunciate a little more. But overall, I think she rocks.

Tonight should be interesting. But I think it will also be predictable. Goodbye Kristy Lee Cook.

Feeling better about myself

I feel a lot better about my American Idol picks and me as a person in general.

Did you see how good I did last night? I called both boys and one of the girls. The other girl was actually on the stage ready to get ousted when Ryan Seacrest decided to stick it to me (and not in a Ryan Seacrest kind of way) and sent Asia'h Epperson home instead. Dude?

Well the competition heats up starting next week as the top 12 battle it out for the ultimate prize: an American Idol victory. Until then...

Gonzalez. Out.

American Idol Week 3 – Girls

Last night was so drab. I was hoping for a great show and instead got a bunch of regular girls singing regular songs. I have favorites, but in my opinion all but two girls should be going home tonight.

Here is my take on the whole thing.

The best last night were, without a doubt, Carly Smithson and Amanda Overmeyer. Yes, two rocker chicks, but still the best performances. In my opinion they are the only two that should not sweat tonight's results out.

Kady Malloy and Kristy Lee Cook were a little sketchy and, in my opinion, are going home tonight. Asia'h Epperson, Ramiele Malubay and Syesha Mercado all did OK. Nothing to write home to mom about, but OK. On the cusp of breaking into the top three girls for me... Brooke White.

There you have it. I think Kady Malloy should have gone home a few weeks ago. She will be tonight for sure. I think Kristy Lee Cook will be joining her.

American Idol week 3 – Boys

Last night was a little different on American Idol, huh?

80's night proved to be a bit of a challenge I think for the boys. Two guys stood out last night to me. David Archuleta once again did a fantastic job on his performance. I agree with Simon that DA needs to start taking on more uplifting songs. But still, DA is pure talent. Not unlike a certain Ruben Studdard a few years back.

David Cook also threw down a very good performance last night. He took a song that was not originally a rock song and turned it into an emotional rock ballad. Well done. Now ditch the guitar so we can hear you sing (or at least hear if you can sing).

David Hernandez also did a decent job, though singing a Celine Dion could have potentially hurt any following he may have been developing. That, and the gay stripteasing he used to do as a career before singing.

Anyway, I think that there are three guys worthy of getting booted from last night's show. Those three are:

  • Luke Menard - I seriously thought this dude should have gotten canned in week 1.
  • Danny Noriega - Another one that I think needs to find something better to do than sing. Maybe David Hernandez can help him out here?
  • Chikezie - He can sing. And he can perform. But last night he showed that he can't do both at the same time all the time.

Let's see how close I am this week. Last week was a bad week for me.

Second four are gone

I thought I was doing good in my picks last week so it was with a not so humble heart that I sat in front of my computer writing out the names of the four people from American Idol that I knew were going home this week. Well, I have been humbled.

For a recap this week we say goodbye to...

  • Jason Yeager
  • Alexandréa Lushington
  • Alaina Whitaker
  • Robbie Carrico

So I do believe that I will be a little more careful in my picks of who I think is hitting the read each week. I like being right. I hate being wrong. This week I was sooo wrong. Next week? We'll see.

Until then here's hoping that the contestants get some rest, get some practice and start sabotaging David Archuleta because that guy is going to be running away with it.

American Idol Week 2 – Girls

I think this will be the last time that I blog about American Idol as it plays out. I like it, but it just takes too long and is almost impossible to do with five kids in the house. To that end, enjoy this last of my running evaluations about American Idol.

  • Carly Smithson - Not good at all. She sounded like she wanted to scream the words not sing the song. As bad as the boys did yesterday none of them did as bad as Carly did tonight.
  • Syesha Mercado - She has a smooth voice but this song did not seem to be the right for her. She can sing as good as any girl on the show but this performance did not at all unleash the performer in her. She sang it. That's all.
  • Brooke White - Not a bad performance. Even with the guitar she sang very well. Not entirely an original performance but it was still very well sang and very well performed.
  • Ramiele Mulabay - I think she did a pretty good job with this song. She sang it well. She didn't perform it like it was hers, but she did sing it well and in a singing competition that can go far. I think she'll be safe but this performance will be forgotten by tomorrow.
  • Kristy Lee Cook - Not my favorite performance, though it was a very well sang song. I am still wondering when someone is going to do like David Archuleta did last night and take ownership of the song they are singing. Great vocal but lacked a lot of spirit.
  • Amanda Overmeyer - This girl can rock, but tonight it seemed like her performance was a little scattered. She can sing, she can perform, but tonight it didn't seem to come together for me. It was rockin', but not as well as I could expect.
  • Alaina Whitaker - Entirely too plain of a performance. She didn't sing it very well, she didn't perform it very well and she didn't do anything special with the song. It was an easily forgettable night for her and, if she makes it to next week, she should count her lucky stars.
  • Alexandréa Lushington - Yeah, I don't think so. Not sure what that was all about but it is not really the level of performance that wins this competition.
  • Kady Malloy - Wrong song, wrong night. I thought she was bad last week. This week I think it is her last week.
  • Asia'h Epperson - Wow, did those shrill shrieks really come out of her like that? That was the most awful performance of the entire competition so far, including Hollywood week. Goodnight Asia'h. I think this is the end of the line for you.

Well given the way tonight went, I think I can select my front runner. Much like Melinda Doolittle last year, David Archuleta is the singer to beat this year. Girls going home this week are...

  • Kady Malloy
  • Asia'h Epperson

Let's see how things work out for me.
