There are times in a person’s life when someone comes along and impacts your world significantly. It happens to everyone at least once. It could be your first love. Or the first time you were betrayed. It could happen when you are young or when you are old. That person can be an old lady or a young man. Or your neighbor. Or in the case of several people in Northern California earlier this year, a baby. A baby that in a little over 40 days showed me more about the grace of God, peace of God, love of God and strength of the God-given spirit that is in us all than I have experienced in quite a while.
Baby John was the baby that by all accounts should not have been born. He also should not have lived after he was born. According to some doctors he should have been “terminated”, a lovely physicians term used to describe the senseless slaughter of an unborn child. Why did the doctors even offer the option to terminate this boy? There will be more on this in just a little bit. For now, let’s take a look at why he wasn’t.
God is bigger
There is a very simple explanation for why baby John was born. God needed this kid to be here for the time that he was here. He touched lives. He brought people in his family closer together, albeit for a short time, for something much greater than a birthday party or something like that. He restored, in some people, the belief that even through the darkest times God can shine through and that, when we are covered in God’s light, we too can shine before all men, that they may see our good works and glorify the Father.
You see, Ray and CeeCee are a young couple, about the same age as my wife and I. They are our very best friends. We have known them for about ten years or so and we have quite a bit in common. They had their first child a few weeks after my wife and I had our first child. They had their second child a few weeks before we had our second child. In fact, we are the godparents to their second child and they are the godparents to our second child. Until late last year they had four kids. Until late last year, we had four kids. We love their family immensely.
Needless to say, it pained me greatly to find out that early on in their pregnancy with John he was diagnosed with a condition know as Dandy-Walker Syndrome. You can read up on this disease at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke web site. In a nutshell, the fourth ventrical of the brain becomes enlarged and allows more fluid in the brain area than should be there. This causes deformities and disablities on a ranging scale, but the prognosis is usually not good when a child in the womb is diagnosed with this disease. In this case, a typical offer made by the physician is “termination of pregnancy”. This option was offered to the Hubers, but they elected to pass on that offer. If there was nothing more to add to this scenario, this would be enough of a testimony. But God is good so you know there is always more.
